ABOUT ME

Eugene Greaney Counselling was established in 2009. After my studies in counselling and
Psychotherapy in UCD I went to work as a counsellor in Harristown House in Roscommon.
During my time there I got promoted to Director of Treatment and managed the residents
treatment plans and was privileged to be a part of the journey of the men that came for
treatment at the centre.
In 2009 I set up my own private Counselling practice and have been working with clients since.

MY APPROACH

"Who looks outside, dreams; who looks inside, awakens"

  Carl Jung.

Life challenges us all in unexpected ways and sometimes we find ourselves faced with situations that cause confusion, anxiety and emotional pain. In those situations, it is wise to reach out for support and to find a safe place to explore how to overcome difficulties and to find a way forward that is best for you and for those closest to you. Counselling can help you greatly to understand and clarify the difficulties you are experiencing and to empower you with the solutions to manage these difficulties in a more manageable way, with the goal to give you back control of your life. My approach is to foster greater self - awareness and a deeper self - acceptance while finding creative ways to overcome the challenges and difficulties that have come into your life. This can include difficulties in relationships, struggles with family including parenting, personal feelings of helplessness, confusion about life direction and many other issues that can intrude and get in the way of your happiness and fulfilment. I am an accredited member of the IAAAC and have over 16 years, experience in the field of counselling, with specific focus on addiction, family life issues, adolescence, troubled teenagers and relationships. I worked as Director of Treatment in Harristown House Rehabilitation Centre in Roscommon for several years before I established my own private practice.

Counselling Process.
Making a decision to attend counselling is a positive step and can offer support beyond that
from family and friends. It offers an environment in which you can express your feelings, and
gain deeper insight into your difficulties. Counselling sessions are also confidential, so you can
talk about the things you might not feel comfortable discussing with anyone else.

The aim is to help you find better ways to understand yourself, and to bring about changes, to

help you manage the way you think or behave to improve your mental and emotional well-
being.

However, everyone's process is different. Some people may have long-standing difficulties that
they finally want to come to terms with, while others may want someone to talk to without being
judged.

COMMON QUESTIONS WE GET ASKED

WHAT SHOULD I EXPECT IN MY FIRST APPOINTMENT?

The first session will be an initial assessment to discuss the client’s history and needs for treatment. During the first session, the client will have the opportunity to see how therapy will work, review the counselling policy, privacy and confidentiality.

WHAT WILL I HAVE TO TALK ABOUT?

The first session will be getting to know more about you and the difficulties you have been experiencing in your life. Common questions will be like “what has brought you here today” which is an opportunity to discuss the problems that have been causing you some problems.

WILL IT BE CONFIDENTIAL?

Yes all sessions are confidential and it is the foundation how trust can be established between the client and the counsellor. All counsellors who are accredited are bound by the code of ethics as outlined by their association. These points are all discussed at the first session.

HOW LONG DOES COUNSELLING TAKE?

There is no standard time frame or particular attendance guidelines for counselling. The length of time the Counseling process takes depends on the individual. We are all different with different needs and therefore it can take anything from a few weeks, to a few months.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR COUNSELLING TO WORK?

People will start to feel better straight away from having made the decision to start their journey to wellness. It takes time to begin to establish the relationship with a client, so every person is going to have a different experience. But from experience usually after 6 sessions the client should start to feel better about themselves.

DO I SEE THE SAME COUNSELLOR EVERY WEEK?

Yes
